Val McDermid's Karen Pirie is sneaky and stubborn and carries a huge chip on her shoulder. She's not always easy to like, but perhaps that's the point. McDermid's main character is dimensional in a way that her supporting cast often isn't. I found that the solutions to the various mysteries in the novel telegraphed themselves from early on. This didn't prevent the novel from being readable and enjoyable. Crash course in Scottish included.Val McDermid's Karen Pirie is sneaky and stubborn and carries a huge chip on her shoulder. Kathy Reichs is getting tired. Or maybe Temperance Brennan is. And I weary of Tempe's perennial relationship with Ryan, which never seems to develop beyond "on again, off again" despite the fact that the couple are (sort of) cohabiting. Reich's coy allusions to Tempe's and Ryan's sex life have become repetitive and cloying.
Reichs' heroine reveals herself to be snobbish, elitist, and fat-shaming through the snide remarks that crop up every three pages or so. These throwaway comments are meant to be funny, but they just make me dislike a character who started out to be quite sympathetic 19 novels ago. Reich's heroine is no more appealing because she takes her considerable wealth for granted; she co-owns homes in two cities and thinks nothing of flying from Montreal to Nashville to conduct her hobby investigations. Her compassion for the victims she encounters centres on her desire to punish the perpetrators of their wrongful deaths like some kind of avenging angel.
Perhaps because I'm bilingual, I find it tiresome when every bit of French is translated into English. (C'mon, Reichs, did you really have to translate Cité de la Biotech?) Similarly, each morsel of science is spelled out in painful detail and sludgy dialogue, nothing left to context or the reader's imagination. Coincidences fly so fast and thick the reader nearly has to duck.
Conclusion: avoid this novel unless you're a die-hard Reichs fan.Kathy Reichs is getting tired. Or maybe Temperance Brennan is. Lots of black, white and wood. Some pretty spaces, but few of them were compelling. Supposedly the author featured six styles, but it seemed more like one with variations.

Despite the kindergarden ethics of the sleuthing pair who animate this novel, it's an enjoyable and well-crafted piece of fiction. There are a couple of anachronisms: the Sony Pressman was only invented in 1978, so was probably not all that common in January 1979; punk was alive and well in that year, if not in its first flush of youth. Even so, it's interesting to read the social, fashion, and political background that McDermid includes in the story, not to mention the home decor descriptions.Despite the kindergarden ethics of the sleuthing pair who animate this novel, it's an enjoyable and well-crafted piece of fiction. Using her native wit and determination, Thursday Next conquers yet again despite ever more formidable obstacles. This whole series could be read as an acerbic commentary on our own dystopian society...or it could simply be appreciated for its endearing and amusing qualities.Using her native wit and determination, Thursday Next conquers yet again despite ever more formidable obstacles. Pretty patterns, attractive layout. However, the designs are fairly standard, without anything unusual. Good for a beginning crocheter.

Lake likes to group several accent colours together in a white or off-white scheme. Sometimes those colours are pastels; sometimes they're stronger hues intended to complement the pastels. Pleasant but not particularly interesting.
