Quotations
- "We come into this world out of the dark. We haven't got a clue where we've come from. We've got no idea where we're going. But while we're here in the world, if we're brave enough, we flap our wings and fly."

This is the first manga book I've ever read, recommended to me by the teen librarian at the Broadview Branch. The illustrations are beautiful and dreamy, and the storyline equally so. It might sound from the description like this is a story about a boy fighting monsters, but it isn't. It is more about people (and mythological creatures) solving their problems and learning to work together while learning about themselves. I thought it was great, even though I haven't read much other manga to compare it to. Besides, the lucky cat Nyanko Sensei is so cute! This is the first manga book I've ever read, recommended to me by the teen librarian at the Broadview Branch. Quotations
- "When I was little, I saw a blue bird and looked it up in the field guide. I found out it was a kingfisher. Then I saw a blue animal and looked it up. I found out it didn't exist. What I see may or may not exist."

I absolutely LOVE this book! Classic Diana Wynne Jones humor, very clever, with appealing lovable characters. I have known about this book for a while, but I never paid it much attention because (1) why would I want to read a book where the main character turns into an old lady and (2) I confused it with some other book and assumed that Wizard Howl was some sort of ogre (which he is not, but I will not spoil the story by saying more.) PLEASE do not make the same mistakes that I did! By the way, who else has noticed that plenty of Diana Wynne Jones books/stories have a character with an ridiculously exceedingly large appetite?I absolutely LOVE this book! Sadly, I never read this book the first several times I encountered it because I judged it by its cover. I assumed that it was either (1) a bland, ordinary story about a boy who spends his summer discovering how much he likes to play baseball or (2) a ridiculous story about a baseball-loving boy and his friends who go on silly adventures in a flying bathtub. It is neither, and the cover has little to do with the story. Instead, Summerland is an engaging blend of Norse mythology, American tall tales and folklore, Native American mythology, and baseball. Also, it is partially set on a fictional island in the South Puget Sound area. Oh, and it actually IS about a boy who spends his summer discovering how much he likes to play baseball. Only, "bland" and "ordinary" are two words that do not apply to Summerland at all.Sadly, I never read this book the first several times I encountered it because I judged it by its cover. A wonderfully creepy, lyrical book. Ray Bradbury's writing is amazing!

I enjoyed the Irish legends and mythology infused into a story that would have been good, but not nearly as good, without them. The third-person narration involves the reader so much that it seems sometimes to be first-person narration.

The excellent first installment in the Airborn trilogy, this book kept me hooked until the end. Airborn has a well-planned plot, with plenty of surprises and seemingly trivial details which later turn out to be important. Plot elements such as storms, pirates, and shipwrecks, which have been overused in other adventure books to the point of dullness, seem fresh and new in Airborn. The characters, even relatively minor ones, are thoroughly developed, with fears and dreams that seem vividly real.
