This story is charming, and the illustrations are very well done, though the translation is a little stilted in places.

Though a well-written and insightful satire, this book was just too silly for me : I prefer silliness to be balanced with some measure of sobriëty. For those who like unmeasured (and often biting) humour, this book will do the trick!

Well-written and well-thought-out, this book shows CS Lewis at his best: academic and thorough, but at the same time humble and accessible. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is wondering what the Christian Faith is all about.

This book contains two stories (‘Curtain’ and ‘Sleeping Murder’), both by Dame Agatha Christie. ‘Curtain’ is a Hercule Poirot mystery, and it is splendid. If the prose is a little stiff, the drama more than compensates. It takes place near the end of the dashing M. Poirot’s life, and this adds a great deal to the tale. The resolution is comfortably convincing (and yet unexpected), the murders sufficiently vile, and the character development quite decent. I should have given the book a much better rating had it only had this first story.
The second story, ‘Sleeping Murder’, is a Miss Marple mystery. While the actual mystery and resolution are fascinating, they would have been better suited to a shorter story. As it is, the story came across as a little too long for its own good, and in several places the drama of the tale was insufficient to support the unlively prose. All in all, a decent tale, but not quite of the quality I have come to expect of Dame Agatha’s writing.
PS. It hardly matters, but I think ‘Gwenda’s House’ would have been a much better title for the second story. This book contains two stories (‘Curtain’ and ‘Sleeping Murder’), both by Dame Agatha Christie. ‘Curtain’ is a Hercule Poirot mystery, and it is splendid. This is a fascinating book, but, as has been said by others, it is a chronicle of the history of Middle Earth, and it reads accordingly. I plan on rereading it, as it is very dense, and I am sure I missed a great deal of detail the first time through.
All in all, it is very well written. As is always the case with Tolkien, the level of detail in his imaginings is incredible! This is a fascinating book, but, as has been said by others, it is a chronicle of the history of Middle Earth, and it reads accordingly. This book will be most useful as a refresher course to someone who has sewed before. It is not, however, the 'beginner's guide' it claims to be.

Wolf Larsen is an intensely interesting character! The novel is a study of the mind and body, and what it means to be human and what it means to be moral, so be prepared to do a good deal of thinking! Overall, it is a very satisfying read.

This book is best-suited for those who already like Roman history, though I think it is well-written enough to be enjoyed by most people.
