Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel
When Ben Tomlin's mother brings home his "new baby brother," an eight-day-old chimpanzee, Ben is far from thrilled. His father, a renowned behavioural scientist, has uprooted the family and moved them halfway across the country, to Victoria, B.C., so he can pursue a high-profile experiment -- to determine whether chimpanzees can learn human sign language.

Add a CommentLearning about chimps through the eyes of a family. Yes, chimps can acquire sign language - interesting from a scientific viewpoint, but not really in the best interests of these animals who are controlled by humans. There have been documentaries about cute baby chimps who are used for TV ads. I feel angry and saddened at their plight. Also, they face a terrible future when they mature and aren't so cute anymore - often euthanized.
i have been waiting for this book for like forever and now that i have read it its just AMAZING!! i give a 4 stars for the this book you'll enjoy it!!! :D
It is the mid 1970s and 13 year old Ben has just relocated from Toronto to Victoria-- new school, new friends, new...brother? Ben's parents are scientists embarking on a new project: can our closest living relatives, chimpanzees, learn true language? Zan, a baby chimpanzee, joins the family to be raised as a human within the family. Initially reluctant, Ben gets more and more attached to Zan at the same time he must negotiate the minefields of middle school, social class, love, friendship, and family relationships. off to a somewhat slow start, Half Brother feels predictable and pleasant without being anything special-- at first. But the story and the characters slowly deepen and grow drawing us in with action and drama as well as the deeper philosophical questions of what it means to be human. The ending seems a little rushed. Still--thoughtful and provocative--lots to discuss here. I enjoyed it and recommend it
BEST BOOK EVERR :D
omg luv this book XD
this was a really good story. the concept was very interesting. it was really sweet how ben thought of zan as a brother rather than a pet. but i was confused on one part: did the story take place in the 1900 or the 2000??
Half Brother was a sweet novel that really tugged on your heart strings. What kept me reading was the relationship between Zan and Ben. I liked how their relationship grew and Ben found himself learning to let more people into his heart. They both looked out for each other it was incrediable. The ending was very bittersweet but I would not dare to change it because it was a perfect ending to such a sweet family story.Excellent!
It was a good and interesting read, but it did go by really fast. It was May in one chapter and then August in the next. The way the author wrote the book was brilliant and it was fun to read how Ben grew closer to Zan and how they were almost brothers. Not to mention how Ben would do anything to keep Zan safe.
as like all other kenneth oppel books, this one was great! i loved the unique story! i hope there will a sequel
Half-Borther was a great book it was cool becuase it showed what life would be like with a baby chimp brother. Also i thought it was cool that Ben stood up for Zan in the hardest of time and fought through for him.
