Being a proud product of the coalmines of KY, I felt like it was my duty to watch this series. Some of the name dropping sends chills down my spine. Like, "Tate's Creek Bridge" I noticed it didn't look like "it" the last time I was there. That's 'cause it's NOT! The first season is actually filmed on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, PA. Season #2 & #3 are filmed in Southern California. I noticed Palm Trees in some background shots in #2. We didn't have Palm Trees; we had tobacco plants and Mulberry Trees. I didn't think my homees would put up with camera crews from Hollywood showing up on their front porch. I do like the show, it makes me want to drink bourbon and shoot cans and bottles with a loaded weapon.

If you enjoy the character Raylan Givens, read "Pronto," "Riding the Rap," and "Raylan," by Elmore Leonard. The try Leonard's "Cuba Libre," "The Moonshine War," and "City Primeval."

This season lacks the wit and terrific character driven stories of the first two. This time around there's more violence and a darker less likeable vibe. Justified has gotten by just fine without cheapening itself until now. Did they run out of ideas? It's easier to write violence because there's not much story and little to no dialogue. The characters aren't even memorable this time 'round, particularly Neal Mcdonough. I wouldn't say the show has jumped the shark but its headed that way.

This show is more or less a cop drama. That is not my bag. That being said, I love this show. Olyphant just plays the gunslinger to a tee. The dialogue is well written for the good guys and the bad. There are always many interesting and/or quirky secondary characters. Yes. The show is not based in reality. But I like the fantasy it is selling.

Season 1 was quite good. Season 2 really stood out with the Margo Martindale character. Season 3 is when the series becomes a chauvinist fantasy. There have been 40 or 50 deaths in the tiny holler. Way, way, way too many guns, standoffs, bombs and illicit activity. Neal McDonough played Robert Quarles, this season's villain, superbly. But it doesn't matter because the cartoon-like story line drowns out his outstanding performance. I knew the ex-wife/recently impregnated by Raylan blah, blah was going to be edged out this season . Raylan Givens cannot be tied to a ball and chain. He's the holler baller, able to perform intercourse while standing up. He's an heroic horsey for the trance induced couch potato. The dvd cover says it all.

The writers succeeded to emulate Elmore Leonard prose in the dialogue, wonderful to listen and watch. This collection of quotes are from season one but worthwhile to revisit: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1489428/quotes

This series brought to life the stories from "Fire in the Hole" by the old master Elmore Leonard: http://www.elmoreleonard.com/index.php?/stories/fire_in_the_hole/

I was very excited about this show, being that I love action movies and think Olyphant is a great actor. Imagine my disappointment when it became apparent that this was another attack on Conservatism… Among other things they mix a bunch of white supremacists Nazis with crosses and Bibles—which has absolutely NOTHING to do with “Southern culture,” that is actually pictured in the movie more like a large expanse of trailer park trash! Yet, the Nazis (i.e., Socialist German Worker’s Party) despised religion—unless we consider their devotion to Gaya and the Environment, which was their religion… I’ll pass on this one!
