Freight Train

In powerful words and vibrant illustrations, Donald Crews evokes the essence of inexorably rolling wheels, so that even a child not lucky enough to have counted freight cars will feel he has watched a freight train passing. A book truly for the youngest child -- and for every one of us who has been that child.

Brief text and illustrations trace the journey of a colorful train as it goes through tunnels, by cities, and over trestles. Be sure to make lots of train noises as you share this book : clickety-clack, chugga-chugga, choo-choo!

This book was a little more simple than I had anticipated with the award announced on the front, however my boys enjoyed it much more than I would have expected and both my 2 year old and 4 year old went back to it to look through themselves later, so it definitely caught their attention, which makes it better than I thought. I did like how it named the different types of cars on a train. My 4 year old liked counting the cars and naming the colors.

I sometimes wonder what the Caldecott criteria is for giving out book medals. This book had so much promise but I didn't feel it delivered. The concept was awesome. It teaches about the names of different train cars. It teaches color. It teaches perspective and movement. But the book is only 20 pages long and has only a few words. I felt like the book wasn't supposed to be finished yet. Like it needed 10 or 20 more pages to be complete. And what age would this be appropriate for? Learning about the train itself is for older children, but learning about colors is for very little children. I think this book would be great for a family who has a miniature train set at home or who love trains. I could see very little children enjoying the colors and movements. But otherwise this would be an iffy purchase for a child.
Would I recommend this book? MAYBE. Depends on child's interests

Simple, simple text and pictures. It didn't do much for me but a four year old boy would go nuts for this book.

My 2YO loves this one. The colors are great, and he likes turning each page and naming the cars. This is a great one for toddlers!

This book is good for both infants and toddlers. When they are young they will enjoy the bright colors and simple modernistic train representations. When they are older, becuase it is a sparse book---it will help them undersand motion and the parts of the train. Good for a child that likes architecutre and trains as well.

If your child likes trains this book is perfect for a young toddler. Bare any words. But the images come across strongly. I give it a "B"
