I just finished this book a few minutes ago. I read it in one night. It was an amazing story. It helps bring to light the happenings of child abuse and how you need lots of evidence in order to pass in court. At times, I became angry with Nikki in this book. Why should she be able to hit her kids and be so uncaring and not have anyone realize it? I enjoyed the ending, and I'll admit I cried a little. I would recommend this book to any person who wanted an insight on life in general or child abuse specifically.

I really liked Nancy Werlin's book "The Killer's Cousin" — so I thought I'd try this one, too. This was just as good, but in a different way — less suspenseful, and more about the exploration of character. It's interesting to try and understand the nature of child abuse from the point of view of Matthew, an older child (he grows from 11-14 or so) who tries to support and help his two siblings against his mother. The depiction of his attitudes/emotions and the situation seems realistic but also hopeful.

This is a unique and believable depiction of child abuse. There is little physical violence, but the mother’s unpredictable moods and twisted control of her children bring a high level of emotional intensity and suspense to the book. This book will appeal to both boys, due to the role of Matthew as narrator, and girls, due to the role of Matthew’s sisters and the emotional story. Overall, Rules of Survival is an excellent choice for readers who are willing to explore the painful reality of child abuse.

Excellent book!!!!!! I think the mother is mean, horrible, and a disgrace to moms everywhere. But you know, everyone has their perks and faults. This one just has more faults than perks. =/

This book was very good. It was very emotional and extremely realistic. I loved it!!!! You should read it 100%!
