… More »Jane Hayes is a seemingly normal young New Yorker, but she has a secret. Her obsession with Mr. Darcy, as played by Colin Firth in the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, is ruining her love life: no real man can compare. But when a wealthy relative bequeaths her a trip to an English resort catering to Austen-crazed women, Jane¿s fantasies of meeting the perfect Regency-era gentleman suddenly become realer than she ever could have imagined. Decked out in empire-waist gowns, Jane struggles to master Regency etiquette and flirts with gardeners and gentlemen - or maybe even, she suspects, with the actors who are playing them. It¿s all a game, Jane knows. And yet the longer she stays, the more her insecurities seem to fall away, and the more she wonders: Is she about to kick the Austen obsession for good, or could all her dreams actually culminate in a Mr. Darcy of her own?

Quotes
Add a Quote“It is a truth universally acknowledged that a thirty-something woman in possession of a satisfying career and fabulous hairdo must be in want of very little”
“What are you doing?" "Ya!" said Jane, whirling around, her hands held up menacingly. It was Mr. Nobley with coat, hat, and cane, watching her with wide eyes. Jane took several quick (but oh so casual) steps away from Martin's window. "Um, did I just say, 'Ya'?" "You just said 'Ya,'" he confirmed. "If I am not mistaken, it was a battle cry, warning that you were about to attack me. I, uh..." She stopped to laugh. "I wasn't aware until this precise and awkward moment that when startled in a strange place, my instincts would have me pretend to be a ninja.”

Comment
Add a CommentI strongly echo LaimaA's comment. I did finish this book but felt silly & shallow the whole time I was reading it, and a little embarrassed that I finished it. Not everything has to be "War and Peace" (or "Pride and Prejudice"), but really, my standards are higher than this.
Premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Twilight Saga author Stephenie Meyer is one of the producers, Cast includes Keri Russell, Jennifer Coolidge and Bret McKenzie. Sony Pictures Classics will release the film in summer 2013.
This is a complete marshmallow of a book. Not the soft, fluffy, yummy kind of literary marshmallow - like a Helen Fielding or a Sophie Kinsella. This book is a shrunken, dried up marshmallow you find at the back of the cupboard. Do not eat this marshmallow. You will only end up unsatisfied and slightly nauseated from the saccharine aftertaste. This book is bound to disappoint readers of decent chicklit and Janeites alike. What this book needed was a ghost writer in possession of much greater talent than the credited author and a more exacting editor. If you insist on proceeding, it would behoove you to keep your expectations low.
First off: why is this listed as "teen" fiction? The character is in her mid-thirties!! It doesn't really make sense to me. Well, anyhoo it was still a pretty good book and I will check out the sequel and other books by the author. I did find the main character, Jane, to be a bit boring and kind of lame...actually so were all the men...but it was interesting and a fun afternoon read. Also, the ending? Super LAME. But that's just my opinion.
I accidentally read the sequel (Midnight in Austenland) first and I enjoyed that book much more than this one. Austenland is still a cute read but the characters lack the depth of those in the sequel.
I typically enjoy some depth of relationships in Shannon Hale's YA books. Of course, it would be hard to be in-depth when you are writing a novel where everyone is an actor (practically), but this novel felt much more fluffy and unsatisfying.
I've enjoyed other books by Shannon Hale, and I like both Jane Austen and historical reenactments, so I expected to enjoy this... Not so much. I loathed the heroine and could not understand her at all. Why be ashamed of enjoying Pride & Prejudice, either book or movie? That's pretty common and NOBODY really thinks it's embarassing! Also if she hides it so much why does everyone know she's holding out for a Mr. Darcy? When you receive a fancy vacation in a will, either enjoy it and shut up, or decline it and also shut up. The ending felt extremely contrived to me, as well. Frankly, I thought the general concept could make a good, fun, frothy read but this execution of the concept was pretty terrible.
Ridiculous ending!
Great read..I liked the premise and read the book in one day. Well worth the time.
Loved it. It was a quick read...may check out the authors other books.
