Add a CommentIf you are looking for non-typical princess books with a positive message, skip this one and try something else instead. We loved "The Princess Knight" and "Pirate Girl." My girls are age 5 and 6, and I have been searching for "princess" books that break the mold. I was disappointed by this book. To me, instead of seeming independent and strong, she just seems kind of mean. The book doesn't make it clear why she never wants to get married - or why it is a "happy ending" at the end when she gets to live alone with her animals. Or why she doesn't like the final prince who comes along. I'm not saying marriage should be her goal, but just setting up the princes to fail miserably (with no motivation) doesn't make her a good role model, in my book.
