I love Callie, a girl growing up as the 19th century turns into the 20th. Even though her destiny in rural Texas is to be a housewife, she wants to be a scientist. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.

I would add that when I sent this this book as a gift to a 12 year old girl she wrote me a thank-you card saying that the story was the, "...best book she had ever read", and added that her mother was going to, "... order the sequel the…

This is liberal evolutionist trash. I am shocked at the immoral references and the little girl is very disrespectful. Definitely not letting my children read it!

The year is 1899, the place is small town Fentress, Texas. Calpurnia is the only girl in her family, with six brothers, three older and three younger. She is a tomboy, not interested in cooking or needlework, a girl who sneaks out of her…

This book is quite nice filled with animals and plants including the new species of vetch! Well,... Calpurnia's parents are all a little mean to her relationship with her grandfather Captain Walter Tate. Nevertheless the book was great…

I love the cover of this book, so I got it out of the library, I haven't read the whole thing yet, but what I have read I didn't really like. I don't believe in evolution, and I did not think it was about it, but Culpurnia Tate growing up.…

A very cute book about the life of a budding naturalist in 1899. Calpurnia bonds with her intimidating grandfather and struggles with her parents' expectations for their only daughter, which are in competition with her desire to be a…

"The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate" is a nicely written, but limited book. It's main themes are feminism and science, and the author does a fair job of showing us the challenges a white girl from the richest family in a small town in Texas…

Cute and quirky read. There needs to be another book to chronicle how she overcomes the limitations imposed on her.

A spunky, interesting read. I really love Calpurnia and her sense of humour. I was a bit disappointed in the ending. Still, a great pick for YRCA 2012!

I loved reading this book -- it was facinating! However, I felt that there really was no ending to the book -- it just stopped. The main conflict was not resolved -- the problem of Calpurnia's future, though she does begin to resolve to…

Great book. Following along the lines of Charles Darwin's evolution theory, young Calpurnia Tate spends a year in the company of her grandfather observing science and the world around her, not something to be done by a young adolecent in…
