Enjoyable adventure, though rather dark in places, of a young girl, a Misfit who is exiled to Obernewtyn in the north country, close to the White. Post nuclear society struggling which harkens back to the middle ages where there are those who want the new way with no convenience of the old ways, and those searching for the knowledge of the old ways. Good reading.

Absolutely loved this book! I happened upon it by chance and it just sounded intriguing. The first chapter or two were a little dry for me, but once it got going, I had a hard time putting this one down...perfect subway reading and easy to stash in your purse. I read that the author started writing this when a teen, which amazes me. I can't wait to read more in this series.

This book was my favourite for several years. It is wonderfully written, but a bit complicatedly worded. I recommend it to anyone who can understand the complex grammar.

An absolutely brilliant series conceived by Isobelle Carmody in her late teens. The concepts are fresh and engaging and whilst the first instalment is clearly targeting a teenage audience the narrative is sufficiently complex for the books to be suitable for all ages. A book that I have read over and over.
