There's precious little sweetness in Liam's life in the weeks before his 16th birthday: his mother is in prison, and his stepfather Stan is a bullying small-time drug dealer. Liam wants a normal life with mom, his older sister and her baby boy, in a caravan he picked out himself. Naïve, driven Liam comes to the attention of a local crime lord, who offers him employment--but with conditions that are merciless. Liam is locked into a destiny that he can't escape, by a country that has written him off. His dreams of escaping to a better life sabotaged by his own refusal to the misery common to his class.

Pretty good movie. Had trouble though with the Scottish accent, hard to understand a lot of the language, otherwise true to life story for some unfortunate kids.

a 15 year old boy has an idealized and sadly unrealistic vision of his life once his mother gets out of prison and reunites with him and his sister, both of whom she abandoned to the system when they were young. he works criminally hard to make this happen while being betrayed by friend and foe along the way.
hard to watch this and Kes but Loach does give us a spark of hopefulness for these boys in the midst a system determined to grind them down.

thank goodness for subtitles

So depressing that I feel it lost its impact. There needs to be some nuance, some additional dimension or interesting dynamic other than crushing violence and disappointment and betrayal. Realistic, perhaps, but I'd prefer a documentary in which additional human dimensions are shown.

Heartbreaking and completely realistic. Kenneth Loach at his best. Recommended.
