Amazing to think that these independently illustrated African American short stories were written in the late 19th and early 20th century. The writing is brave, edgy and culturally enriching.

This is a great way to teach African American history and poetry to young readers. Its comic book formatting makes it intriguing especially to preteen and teenage boys.

As a mother of two children(girl and boy) I enjoyed reading this to them equally while being able to engage them in a conversation about their history.
