"It's a parallel-universe, Prohibition-era world of mooks and shamuses that is the twisted magic mirror to our bustling Big Apple. It's a city where sinister characters lurk around every corner while the great superheroes who once kept the streets safe have fallen into deadly rivalries and feuds. Not that its colourful residents know anything about the real New York ... until detective Rad Bradley makes a discovery that will change the lives of all its inhabitants."--P. [4] of cover.

Opinion

From Library Staff

If you combined the hardboiled grit of Arrow with the dimension-hopping science heroes of The Flash, you'd get Adam Christopher's Empire State.

This combines a lot of my favorite things: pulp/comic book superheroes, hardboiled detectives, weird science, and a twisty plot. The plot twists get a little too twisty at the very end (although the same could be said about Raymond Chandler's novels), but overall, this is a very fun ride.

Set in a parallel Prohibition-era New York where superheroes have abandoned the populace in order to fight each other, detective Rad Braybury discovers an open portal connecting their world to the real New York while investigating a murder.

Disappointing. A strong start but the plot falters toward the end. Too bad, because the setting and characters are excellent.
