Emily Climbs is the second novel of Emily’s story and it is a decent approach, to say the most. Emily has grown up and wants a good education; thus with much struggle she is allowed to study; but there is a catch. She must live with her mean Aunt Ruth while pursuing her education! So continues the ambitious journey of Emily as she travels amongst a ban from writing fiction, school plays, and all typical Shrewsbury trouble that seems that to follow Emily everywhere she goes. Friendships are lost and created in this middle installment of the series and it is proven that unlike Anne, Emily will not instantly make a place in her heart because she is anything but perfect. But at the same time, Emily is such a bright and intelligently portrayed character that you can’t help but place a hold on the last book. I also love how easy it is to relate to Emily because she is being displayed as real and raw as a young girl growing up. Rating 4/5

Emily Starr is not Anne Shirley -- that's apparent in the first book in this trilogy, but I feel like it's a fact that's really driven home in this, the middle installment. Emily has more of an edge than Anne does -- she is not going to, Anne-like, win everyone over with her sunny outlook on life. She can be sarcastic, she can occasionally be mean -- and I like her all the more for it. This is a lovely story of growing up -- one that I really think I appreciate more now as an adult than I did when I first read this as a kid.
