I had heard a lot of good things about Myke Cole, but never actually got around to checking out any of this stuff until I got my hands on this audiobook for Control Point. I liked it.

What we have is a Military/Sci-fi/Fantasy genre mash which worked really well. In a plot that has echoes of the X-Men, random humans around the world suddenly develop magical powers, making them a threat to the status quo (not the band - in a sequel maybe?). Cue the shady government department that swoops in to control said "probes" and save the law-abiding citizens of the world. Until all goes pear-shaped.

The plot revolves around Oscar Britton, a career soldier who works for said department, but develops his own abilities and immediately becomes a "threat". Whisked away to another dimension/realm, Britton struggles with his loyalty to his country and the callous way in which the government deals with both probes and the denizens of the other dimension, while dealing with his own burgeoning powers.

The plot rattles along at a fast pace, with likeable characters spotted throughput, particularly Oscar and his nemesis Fitzy. The narrator did a good job, juggling a bunch of voices so you never wondered who was speaking at any given time. Unlike some other military fiction, the author kept the military jargon and the gun porn to a minimum (actually no gun porn), making the story very accessible to anyone who likes good sci-fi and fantasy, military or otherwise.

PS Myke Cole is also a fun follow on Twitter...
