The Defining Decade

Why your Twenties Matter and How to Make the Most of Them Now

Our "thirty-is-the-new-twenty" culture tells us the twentysomething years don't matter. Some say they are a second adolescence. Others call them an emerging adulthood. Dr. Meg Jay, a clinical psychologist, argues that twentysomethings have been caught in a swirl of hype and misinformation, much of which has trivialized what is actually the most defining decade of adulthood.

Drawing from a decade of work with hundreds of twentysomething clients and students, THE DEFINING DECADE weaves the latest science of the twentysomething years with behind-closed-doors stories from twentysomethings themselves. The result is a provocative read that provides the tools necessary to make the most of your twenties, and shows us how work, relationships, personality, social networks, identity, and even the brain can change more during this decade than at any other time in adulthood- if we use the time wisely.

THE DEFINING DECADE is a smart, compassionate and constructive book about the years we cannot afford to miss.

This book opened my mind to a whole new perspective on my 20s. I wish more young people would read this book!

I wish I had read this book in my twenties...actually, a couple of years before I turned 20!

I feel like I'm on a good track based on what I read in this book, but I also picked up on some great points when dealing with the mind shift that's required from being a child / student, to being an adult. Nobody is going to tell you that your adult life has officially started, and there isn't any structure or plan waiting out there for you. Highly recommended read as an opportunity to thoughtfully consider how you spend the rest of your years, when you're in a position to actually change the course of them!

This book was very beneficial for me at the time in my life where I am about to transition from college to the working world. Through her client's stories, I was able to find relatable points that coincided with my life and how I can steer myself in a successful direction. By simply taking time to plan my future and take steps towards leading a happy life.

I loved this! I think any twenty-something who reads this can get something out of it, if only to help reaffirm their life choices so far.

This was a very timely read for me, as I just finished my degree. Right now, I'm in the "what's next?" phase of my 20's. Thanks to Jay's anecdotes, facts, and narrative I am able to prioritize major life events and put my dreams into action plans. This book has given me the motivation and inspiration for a life well lived.

Tell me something I don't know. Work hard, set goals, and don't take life for granted is the underlying message in this book. And oh yeah, ladies, you gotta have a baby NOW.
