I'd compare this to Kushiel's Dart for the intricate complexity and luxury of the worldbuilding, with some of the same sprawling feel of Game of Thrones, but comprised of a single book rather than a series. I haven't read any of Smith's other books as yet, but that will change. The presence of a queer protagonist was what drew me to this book, and it delivered a well-crafted story with interesting characters and a compelling protagonist.

Another fascinating fantasy epic from Sherwood Smith – this one follows the adventures of a Colendi princess and her scribe as they encounter life among the Marlovens. A little more transparent than the Inda series, but equally compelling as an investigation of court intrigue.
