A pleasant and interesting read. Mystery and history. Will seek out other books by this author.
Book is heavily gender-specific. Impossible to follow. Had to put it down because partway in, couldn't understand what the author was even talking about.
Finally when I read one more long detailed passage about upper-class women of England during the time of the American Revolution (which of course is never mentioned) carefully choosing the color of their gown for tonight to closely say exactly what they want and followed by a detailed (and improbable) description of how they took care of their hair and then the plot only moved forward by a single sentence I realized I was never going to understand what this book was about, except to come to the conclusion that if upper-class 18th century women were like this then it would go a long way to explain why the majority of American Men felt that they needed to fight a war against them, and win it.
A fairly tight type of mystery set in 1790's, although not extraordinary in story line. Writing flows well.
The above library description has nothing to do with this book. This is a good historical read with detail to satisfy anyone interested in the period. I enjoyed it especially as it used a strong intelligent woman as a major character. The author did her research about so many details which only adds to its richness.
Worth reading, though I guessed whodunnit within the first few chapters. Some of the plot could have been tightened up a little.
A great historical series, these books trace the murder investigations of Gabriel Crowther & his adventurous aide Mrs. Westerman. He is an anatomist who prefers the bones of the dead to polite society & she is a proper english lady who chafes at the restrictions placed on women of her status by the society of the time. This instalment is more personal as Crowther must return to the estate of his birth & the past he has travelled the world to avoid & forget. We finally learn the secrets he has kept so carefully hidden in past books. Their relationship is unusual & entertaining as they try to solve an old murder that quickly leads to new ones. If you like the series by Deanna Raybourn, you'll enjoy these.
