"Gentleman Seeks Housekeeper. Must be willing to travel. Desperate for another life away from Philadelphia, headstrong and beautiful Mariah Cooper answers an advertisement for a housekeeper at the other end of the continent. Waiting in California is the most breathtaking-- and arrogant-- man she has ever met-- and he'd like nothing better than for Mariah to go back home! Logan Yates has run Destiny, the family ranch, since he was a boy. He doesn't need this Eastern miss his stepmother hired, though his home's chaotic state suggests otherwise. Still, he's secretly pleased that Mariah gives as good as she gets-- and he must fight the urge to take her in his arms and kiss her whenever she proudly stands her ground. But when he's in danger of losing her, Logan will have to choose between pride-- and his heart's true desire" -- p. [4] of cover.

Very good book! I highly recommend this reading because it places you after emancipation. Though it doesn't focus so much on the lingering injustices to former slaves during that time, the writer does not completely neglects it. However, the focus is on the lives of Black peoples: careers, family lives, and moving on from slavery and fastly approaching the turn of the century. I enjoyed the romance that evolved between the two main characters. But what I enjoyed the most was the history lessons as she mentions the 49-ers and she hints upon the Jim Crow laws in effect (mason/dixon line). I appreciate the author's obvious research into that time period of the 19th century, noting the technology of that time (telegram wiring, locomotive transportation). It brings forth the lost art of 'letter writing.' Beverly Jenkins also includes her sources in the back of the book. I'm looking forward to reading and commenting on the following two sequels of this charming trilogy.
