Short sentences and accessible words helped to earn The Watermelon Seed the 2014 Geisel Award—named after Dr. Seuss—for best beginning reader book. His screenprinted illustrations and fantastic use of only green, pink, black, and white give the book a vintage feel, as if it was published long ago.

Cute story, would be great for a read aloud. I'm sure we have all swallowed a seed or two in our time.
