A chilling work of psychological suspense and forensic memoir, this is a tale of a woman who reinvented herself so completely that her previous life seemed to vanish, and of a daughter who reclaims an abandoned past. Emma Brockes grew up hearing only pieces of her mother's story. After her death, Emma begins a dangerous journey into the land her mother fled from to unearth the truth.

Not as thrilling or suspenseful as advertised. I felt through much of it that the author only came away with a little information that she could actually share, and what she could share felt very disjointed much of the time.

"Documents the author's investigation into a shattering childhood trauma in South Africa, tracing the discovery of her grandfather's abuse of her mother, which compelled her mother's unsuccessful attempt to kill him before fleeing the country." July 2013 Biography and Memoir newsletter

A true page turner. Emma Brockes managed to convey the South Africa that many of us know with humour and insight. I felt as if I knew those poeple she wrote about. A fascinating story about her wonderfully brave mother.
