This was a disappointing read. It felt like juvenile fiction, with a Christian subtext thrown in from the author's personal beliefs that didn't really fit anywhere in the plot. I thought this would be an intellectual, deep story, but it was immature fluff with no substance. The author clearly had no experience of street life and her "gritty" character considers taking public transit to be tough and risky. It was cringe-worthy at times.

What a pleasurable read. Very well written and so much intrigue, hard to put down. I felt friends with the characters!

Well written, not too predictable, compelling

A modern re-telling of Jean Webster's "Daddy Long Legs". About a girl who hides behind literature (especially Jane Austen) to protect herself from reality, and tries to break out from behind it. It was a fairly entertaining story, and some of the characters were quite charming. I do wish there were more references to "other" 19th century novels... it is very heavy on the "big 3" by Jane Austen. Certainly reading Austen (or at the least seeing the movies) would be an asset to reading this novel.

"My new favorite title is How Jane Austen Ruined My Life. I don't have the courage to read it, though. I'm afraid to discover she's ruined mine as well.”
― Katherine Reay, Dear Mr. Knightley
