This title was recommended to me owing to my interest in Indian culture. The story has a somewhat small connection with India: the beginning and background of the story. However the book did not have enough of that aspect to be of any real interest to someone seeking out a book exploring India or Indian culture per se. The book maybe of interest to those who have a, ahem, gluttonous appetite for endless food references and menu descriptions. I found the endless descriptions of the food and menus uninteresting and further I found the writing less than compelling. Another simile comparing this or that to a fruit or piece of food and I was going to toss the book in the garbage like the peel of a hastily eaten banana. Arrgh! The story is okay, but nothing more. I would say it 'tries too hard' and comes off as contrived.

I listened to the book as an audiobook and the narrator is not great. I suppose it is my misfortune to have listened to this after listening to Shalimar the Clown whose narrator was fantastic. This narrator's accents were weak and unconvincing. Not only that his pauses and emphases were decidedly 'off' to my ears.

Of course this is only my opinion and the person who recommended the book to me stands by the book having 'quite enjoyed it'.
