A very high impact minute-by-minute account of D-Day, as told from the human perspective of those who were there. There is very little in the way of politics and war strategy here. Just the thoughts, words and actions of those who were on the beaches. The structure of the book jumps quickly from one perspective to another, all arranged in chronological order. This book gave me such a sense of what it must have been like to storm those beaches. I was surprised by how much I didn't know and a bit crushed by how little the human race seems to learn from these horrific situations.

Hemingway is there, Robert Capa-the famous war photographer is there and piper Bill Millin, dressed in his kilt. Bill is playing "Hielan Laddie" and "The Road to the Isles" as his comrades are shot down around him on Sword beach. And Hitler--well he's having lunch. A great book on WWII, with some great anecdotes by those who were there.
