I always liked Lee Grant as an actress. She was... I dunno...different. Not conventionally beautiful, yet strikingly attractive. Not a comedienne, yet hilariously funny in certain roles ("The Landlord," "Plaza Suite"). A wonderful dramatic actress, especially when she's a baddie (episodes of "Ironside" and "Columbo" come immediately to mind).
After reading her memoir, "I Said Yes to Everything" (great title, that) I like her even more as a woman.
Grant had barely begun to come into her own as an established performer before the venal House Un-American Activities Committee took it all (or nearly all) away from her, largely because she declined to name names. She persevered, fighting back where she could, while struggling with a difficult marriage and the demands of parenthood.
Grant talks about all sorts of things here, in a thoughtful, direct way, revealing things about her life's journey that other actresses of her generation (and younger) might prefer to have kept hidden.
Provocative. Poignant. Funny. Brave. I didn't want "I Said Yes to Everything" to end. Which I guess means I don't want Lee Grant to end.
