Eugene Yelchin provides a brilliant snapshot of life under the Soviet Union in Russia for a child orphaned by the regime. The story is very short, but the way Yelchin melds images with his writing transports readers to another place and time. I would definitely recommend this title as well as Yelchin's other similar work, "Breaking Stalin's Nose."
