A full-throttle espionage thriller, starring Joel McCrea as a green Yank reporter sent to Europe to get the scoop on the imminent war. It's wall-to-wall witty repartee, head-spinning plot twists, and brilliantly mounted suspense set pieces, including an ocean plane crash climax with astonishing special effects.

This is a 1940 spy thriller directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
An American reporter tries to expose enemy spies in Britain who are involved a fictional continent-wide conspiracy in the prelude to World War II.
Apparently, it is a British-American propaganda.
The plot is unskilfully contrived, but the timing of its release was pretty good because the film opened on 16 August 1940 in the United States and on 11 October of that year in the United Kingdom.
The storyline ends with London being bombed just three days after the Luftwaffe began bombing British coastal airfields in the early Adlerangriff phase of the Battle of Britain, and a week before Germany actually began bombing London.
Although it seems like an unnecessarily-and-tiringly long glorified B movie, Nazi Propaganda Minister Joseph Goebbels praised it as a first-class propaganda film.

Totally mad-cap & a bit hard to follow. Hitchcock said he got the idea based loosely on Vincent Sheenan, journalist (read this info in Citizens of London by Lynne Olson). Joel McCrae is always a delight.

This is Hitch's second Hollywood movie and it is a great but underappreciated one. The last half hour of this movie are as thrilling as any I have watched. The story is engaging and Hitch's technical mastery is quite something, especially for a film made in 1940.

The screenwriter's (and they were many involved in this movie) political message are made clear in Joel McCrea's final lines.

Quite a prescient film from an international political standpoint as well.

If you haven't yet seen this I highly recommend that you do.

Classic, mesmerizing, Hitchcock! Set at the start of WWII.

This was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar and deservedly so. Joel McCrea and Laraine Day performed very well, as did the rest of the cast. Hitchcock seemed to bring out the best in actors.

Joel McCrae was a wonderful under used talent, and all Hitchcock movies were top notch.

I don't understand why this is not listed in Hitchcock's top tier of films. It's a terrific thriller filled with espionage, secret treaties, romance. The plot centers on fictional events leading to the outbreak of a European war.

A wonderful and suspenseful war time classic. The cast was wonderful and a much better picture than Hitchcock's other 1940 film, Rebecca.

One note about the BPL's copies. One copy is a Blueray and would not play on my PC. The other copies are older and work just fine. So something to ask about when you borrow this film.

Vintage film produced by Alfred Hitchcock. However, it was okay viewing; finishing looking at it just to see how it would end. No one of his best but okay for its time of producing mystery/espionage films.
