Smart, witty, entertaining story told in short chapters, news clips, word definitions, poems, etc., about an author who disappears and her translator's efforts to find her.

A fun, playful, short book, organized in brief chapters and shifting perspectives that will keep the reader turning pages to experience each new twist. The author has translated the experimental Brazilian writer Clarice Lispector, and her fans may be delighted to discover distant echoes of Clarice in this work. But Novey is her own person and supplies many original and delicious turns of phrase about translation, Brazil, and her quirky characters.

I enjoyed this book. It is beautifully written. Fun, since the main character is a translater, who talks a lot about the beauty of the author's work she's translating.

A Brazilian novelist climbs into a tree and disappears. Her American translator decides to skip her boring life in wintery Pittsburgh to go to Brazil and help search for the author, only to be ambushed by a threatening loan shark and her own sense of futility.

This is a really pleasant, quick read. The writing is beautiful; the main character and the supporting characters are all interesting and integral to the story. Her subtle observations about the nature and actions of individual characters leads to a lot of the humor of the story. And then, of course, great details about translation

In some ways, this reads like a calmed down version of Carl Hiaasen.
