This is a great escape novel when one needs a quick read with a happy ending. After nearly burning down the Emerson Club with a flaming Baked Alaska, Olivia Rawlings takes a pastry chef job at the Sugar Maple Inn in Guthrie, Vermont. Her best friend, Hannah, recently married a doctor and has settled in the same small town. As Olivia tries to please her aloof boss, she also comes to terms with her married lover and her financial woes in Boston. Life holds many surprises during the novel's two years and leaves the reader feeling satisfied.

After accidently causing a fire at the exclusive club where she works, Livvy flees Boston and becomes the new baker at the Sugar Maple Inn in rural Vermont. Despite her city sensibilities, she finds herself a part of small town life, drawn to the gruff local whom she initially despised, and a blue ribbon contender at the annual pie baking contest.

I read an excerpt from this in Reader's Digest and decided to give it a go. I loved this story. I don't know when I've last devoured a book in 24 hours, but Ms. Miller, you hooked me on this one! I'd love a sequel... and I'm anxious to bake a few pies!! :-)

Olivia is a mess. Having grown up without any real role models or life guides she just has no idea how to make good choices. But after catching her restaurant on fire with a Baked Alaska she's forced to make some big changes. The fun is in watching her grow and mature despite her best intentions to the avoid both.

Another great summer read! While the story is familiar; love, loss, friendship, etc., there are a few twists thrown in all set against the backdrop of a country inn kitchen.

This was such a delightful read. It is meant to be devoured in one sitting, on a rainy or snowy day, supplied with an endless pot of tea and innumerable sweets. I would now like to move to the country, become a pastry chef, work at an inn and romp in the snow. Despite it being July.
