"''One of the most stunning debuts I've ever read ... Every word is near perfect.' -- David Baldacci. A small town hides big secrets in The Dry, an atmospheric, page-turning debut mystery by award-winning author Jane Harper. After getting a note demanding his presence, Federal Agent Aaron Falk arrives in his hometown for the first time in decades to attend the funeral of his best friend, Luke. Twenty years ago when Falk was accused of murder, Luke was his alibi. Falk and his father fled under a cloud of suspicion, saved from prosecution only because of Luke's steadfast claim that the boys had been together at the time of the crime. But now more than one person knows they didn't tell the truth back then, and Luke is dead. Amid the worst drought in a century, Falk and the local detective question what really happened to Luke. As Falk reluctantly investigates to see if there's more to Luke's death than there seems to be, long-buried mysteries resurface, as do the lies that have haunted them. And Falk will find that small towns have always hidden big secrets."--

I am rarely so completely enthralled in a story. The tale of Agent Falk is one I will not soon forget. As soon as I finished this book, I wished for another story by Jane Harper only to realize she'd just released "Force of Nature". Both are must reads!!!

I thoroughly enjoyed this beautifully crafted murder mystery set in a small Australian town. The author doesn't miss a beat with the creation of this story. It's hard to believe this is a first novel. I cannot wait to read her next book. Do not miss The Dry.

good mystery.. I really enjoyed this book and the follow up. Forces of Nature. I recommend both.

The atmosphere of the area is the dust bowl in 1930's America. The town is peopled by worn out people on the brink. I have always considered the Outback of Australia as the last Wild West type frontier, still firmly stuck in the last century and peopled by ghosts of the bad old days. This author will go far if this is her debut novel-great book.

What a book! Sad. Mysterious. Twisty. Hot and arid. Loved the characters. In all honesty, when I started the book I wasn't sure I was going to love it. It didn't take long, however, before I was blown away. Read this book! You won't be sorry.

I usually don't care for mysteries but I loved this book. I loved the way the present murder investigation led to also solving an old murder.

Fast moving, well written; makes you guess to the last few pages.

I did like this. It's a well written introduction to a new mystery solver who I hope gets more fleshed out in Force of Nature. Some plot devices were clunky and jarring but I could forgive that.

Such a good debut novel! I enjoyed the writing and the story. The main character reminded me of the protagonists in Dick Francis's novels -- smart, mild-mannered, standing on the outside. Fortunately, he'll be back.

There was something about the cover of the 'The Dry' that called out to me, I knew from the second I saw it that this was a book I was going to read. From the cover, I didn't expect it to be a debut for both the author and their character, Aaron Falk, but it definitely looked mysterious and that's what I was in the mood for.

I'm a huge fan of the way Harper wrote this book, the way she integrated the past with the present was really well done and made the book read as if it were a movie, it became exceptionally easy to visualize. The atmosphere, the scenery, and the town were great - having lived in a small town myself I could instantly relate to how isolating it all can feel. For a debut novel, 'The Dry' was fantastic, I can't wait to see Harper's writing develop more as we continue on with Aaron Falk and his work.
