This book marks the end of one of the greater literary sagas i have ever enjoyed. If you have not read any Sharpe books yet, do not read this. Start from book one - Sharpe's tiger- and follow him through the years.

The Napoleonic wars are long over when Sharpe and Harper are called from retirement by the wife of one of their war
companions,Blas Vivar, now Captaine-General of Chile. The adventure takes them to call on Napoleon the deposed dictator in exile on St. Helena before they sail around Cape Horn to Chile. It seems no one knows anything about the general's whereabouts. Sharpe takes things into his own hands but to no avail: he and Harper, relieved olf their bribery money are unceremoniously tgossed into a Chilean ship which is expected to take them far, far away.
Until the ship is overtaken by rebels who take the ship captive and sail it back to Chile. There's lots of mayhem as Thomas Cochrane comandeers the ship, sails it back to Chile, and though vastly outnumbered, conquers one of Chile's most important settlements. And oh yes, the Captain --- he's found after having been exiled to some secluded islands off Chile's west coast.
As usual, a good book, well written. And p.s. Thomas Cochrane was a real figure in history --- not just some impossibly larger than life fictional concoction.
