"The flames of memory always seem to glow a little brighter during the holidays. Perhaps that's why this time of year is so difficult for airline heiress Ivy Macintosh, as she faces thoughts of yet another festive season alone. Since the plane crash that claimed the lives of her husband and two children eight years ago, she's been submerged in grief. When eleven-year-old Holly Greenwood knocks on her door, lost and frightened after a forbidden visit to her singing teacher, Ivy's self-imposed exile is shattered. Holly has an extraordinary voice, and wants nothing more than to perform in an upcoming Christmas musical. Holly's father, Daniel, doesn't allow music in their home, refusing to give a good reason why -- just as he refuses to talk about Holly's mother. Ivy has no idea how closely she and Daniel are linked by their tragic pasts, yet she's drawn to the warmth she senses beneath his gruff exterior. And as Christmas nears, their shared concern for Holly begins to draw Ivy back into the world again... and toward a family who may need her just as much as she needs them."--!cProvided by publisher.

Ivy has come to from an eight year bender and is newly alive to the joys of the season.
"“In here,” she said, and led him to the den. This year, she was not going to place her tree in the formal living room, as she found the room lacking in warmth and a bit cold ."
Clearly the reader understands that Ivy's oddly redundant lapses and worries about being seen in last year's fashions are merely symptomatic of an overly stressed liver and will root for her full recovery.
Holly's Dad, alternately Beast and Wicked Stepmother, has spent eight years depriving eleven year old Holly of emotional support and doling out arbitrary punishments. And yet, in her Cinderella-like heart, Holly knows he is a Prince suffering hormonal ennui and will someday snap out of it.
Will Holly make it to the ball, er, Christmas Musical?

It was a good easy read. Not up to Fern Michaels twisting plots, but a quick easy read. The first comment had it right - had to believe that things could turn around so quickly for someone so badly hurt.

Typical Fern Michaels story - but was somewhat unbelievable in sections. Ivy spent 8 years grieving her family spending her time alone and drinking most of the time, not leaving her home for much of anything. However it is supposed to be believed that she put all of that behind her in two days. Then the same is what happens to Holly and her father - 8 years of behavior is redeemed in two days. Has it nice parts if you just take it for a pleasant afternoon holiday read.
