Popular historian David Starkey tells the story of the two greatest war leaders in British history, both of whom were called Churchill. Everyone knows Winston Churchill led Britain and her Allies in their struggle against Hitler; less well known is John Churchill, Duke of Marlborough, who led Britain and her Allies against an earlier would-be dictator of Europe, the Sun King, Louis XIV of France. John Churchill was Winston's ancestor, but he was more than that.

Starkey superimposes Winston Churchill's ten year, one million word, writing project: Marlborough, His Life and Times, onto real world events (the rise of Fascism and Adolf Hitler) taking place from 1930 to 1940. Like the previous reviewer, I was fascinated. It's very watchable and is an approach to Churchill's mind and actions that is taken by no other historian.

Wonderful documentary about arguably one of the most influential leaders
of the 20th century. I'm a huge WC fan so have seen many programs about him. But this one takes a different angle by juxtaposing the history of Churchill's august ancestor, John Churchill, the statesman and soldier who started the family dynasty, with Winston Churchill's life and career. This career, of course, had its apex with the second world war and the historian who wrote and presents in the dvd contends that by writing about the life and times of John Churchill, Winston learned valuable lessons and insights that led him through difficult times. If you are a Churchill buff or just want to learn more about him and this time in history, see this program.
