Beautiful camera-work accompanies this fascinating true story about Queen Victoria and the Indian-born man she becomes friends with in the twilight of her life. If you enjoy the Netflix series "The Crown" you are sure to love this.

Judy Dench is such an outstanding actress and really in her element playing Queen Victoria in this movie. Also loved that it's based on a true story!

Love Judy Dench in anything. Particularly enjoyed this film because it's based on a true story.
A bored tired old woman, who just happens to be the queen, finds spring in the winter of her life.

True story? Maybe, but I don't care. The costumes are wonderful, the acting is superb, the story engaging, and the message a timely one. Beautifully done and one of Dame Judith's best serious roles.

I really did not know this incredible bit of long forgotten (hidden) history. All my life I was under the impression that Queen Victoria was an imperialist and colonial oppressor. Who knew that she was an enlightened, curious, passionate and progressive free thinker. A worthwhile movie to watch. Sometimes a bit cheesy, but overall a good bio and period piece.

Terrific acting and a heart-warming story of a queen who appreciated, too late, the majesty of her subjects.

An Indian clerk named Abdul Karim (Ali Fazal) travels to London to present Queen Victoria (Judi Dench) with a ceremonial coin for her Golden Jubilee. The pair form an unexpected bond upon meeting, but the lifelong friendship that develops is threatened by the disapproval of Victoria's inner circle. As the Queen contemplates what her life of service has meant and the restrictions it has placed on her, Abdul brings her joy as he indulges her fascination with the country she rules over from half a world away. Directed by Stephen Frears. Michael Gambon, Eddie Izzard, and Olivia Williams co-star.

Contrary to the negative reviews regarding this film being boring, I rather enjoyed it. Now, I cannot speak on how historically accurate it is, but watching this straight out of the gate, I found myself immediately immersed. That is, I am not at all familiar with Queen Victoria's latter years, save to say she was terribly depressed and miserable after Albert's death. She also had difficult relationships with her children.

Dench does a remarkable portrayal of the Queen.

Apart from that, I found the acting and visuals well done. And, for anyone finding the dialogue a challenge to follow, I recommend you put the captions on. This is a good movie!

***SPOILER ALERT***
Most controversial scene part 1 of 2:

Mother, we have to see you. Alone.
-I'm in the middle of my Urdu lesson.
Mother, we come with very important news of a highly personal matter.
-I've nothing to hide from Abdul.
Please, Your Majesty. Your Majesty... I'm afraid our news concerns the Munshi. We have proof beyond any doubt that Abdul Karim is a low-born impostor, Your Majesty.
-The Munshi is from a noble family and a long line of teachers.
No, I'm afraid he was a mere clerk in a common jail. My own son has sent word from India and has actually spoken to his immediate superior. His family are completely uneducated. His father is a lowly apothecary. // The Munshi never even went to school, Mother. The man's a complete fraud. And here he is, overlooking the boxes. // I'm afraid it's true, Your Majesty. Abdul and his father are completely common. We have prepared a dossier.

Most controversial scene part 2 of 2:

-You despicable toads! Racialists! Spying? Dossier? Picking on a poor defenseless Indian? Of course he doesn't have qualifications. They do things completely differently out there.
Don't you see, Mama? He's using his position for his own gain.
-And how does that make him any different from any of you? How dare you look down on Abdul? How dare you defame his poor father? Bertie, I'm ashamed that you're part of all this. Abdul is a loyal, wise, sympathetic human being, who has raised himself on his own merits. … It has become apparent that in order to get any respect from the Household, one needs to be formally recognized. In which case, Abdul. I intend to give you a knighthood in the next honors list.
Enough! This is absurd! We cannot protect you from this any further. The man is riddled with gonorrhea!
-Gonorrhea? SIR HENRY:
Yes. Your Majesty.
-Well, you are a doctor. Why don't you treat him? Now get out of my sight, all of you!
