The year is 2108, and the North American Commonwealth is bursting at the seams. For welfare rats like Andrew Grayson, there are only two ways out of the crime-ridden and filthy welfare tenements: You can hope to win the lottery and draw a ticket on a colony ship settling off-world, or you can join the service. Andrew chooses to enlist in the armed forces. But as he starts a career of supposed privilege, he soon learns that good food and decent health care come at a steep price.

Liked the book - started off a little weak, seemed almost like a novelization of the Starship Troopers film (the book based on the film that was based on the other better book). Thankfully it managed to pick up and was able to fully redeem itself by the end of the book, sufficiently that I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

There is a lot packed into a small space in this book - military sci-fi, social commentary (the military as one main escape from the pits of a welfare society), First Contact, a light romance, and plenty of action.

I enjoyed the book, maybe the author met Donald Trump and decided that if he comes into power, North America is headed in that direction!!

With Heinlein's Starship Troopers, the underlying foundation was American Exceptionalism - - with this book by Marko Kloos, the underlying foundation is Future Reality, with a dash of John Brunner or Norman Spinrad, a socio-military book of the highest order! Hated the military, but loved this book!
