The moment we forget that even the evil among us are still human is the moment we forget that even the most human among us are still evil.

Falling in love is about hormones and pheromones and powerful emotions that overwhelm our better judgement. Staying in love requires time and effort and knowledge and trust that has to be earned over the course of lifetimes. Falling in love is the illusion. Staying in love is the real miracle.

It's easy to allow the world to collapse down to our own stories. To see ourselves as the central figure in the only story worth knowing and forget that every person we encounter is living their own, is the center of their own universe. But that's the nature of the human experience.

Applied philosophy. It's not a sexy term, but perhaps it should be. Like within this book. There is philosophy here; it might even be said this story is a philosophical thought project, exploring different ideas about the human condition. Because that's what philosophy is, an attempt to understand the experience of being human. Just, in this case, it is applied to the cause of a story, of being expressed by a series of fictional events and embodied by the very real characters living through those events. The philosophy serves the story and is revealed by the narrative.

So, yeah. Still not sexy. But the book is. It's witty and irreverent, searching and vivid. Full of emotion and relationships. The characters may continuously ponder what life is all about, but they do so because they care for each other. Their story is thought-provoking, but even more it is moving. It's a story that makes you care. Captivating and surreal.
