I adore David Simon's HBO creations. Just this weekend, I binge-watched all 13 episodes of The Wire season 1 for the 8th or 9th time in as many years. I still mourn the cancellation of Treme. Generation Kill literally and metaphorically kicked ass. So you know I came a-running for Simon's new historical drama set in the early-1970s NYC porn trade -- and oy vey, what a letdown.
I hope other folks can love this show like I loved all Simon's other outings, but for me, The Deuce was just ... well, depressing. Not just bleak, but deliberately, relentlessly, aggressively bleak. Simon specializes in depicting the ugliest corners of the American psyche, but he always leavens the darkness with sardonic hilarity & unexpected glimmers of warmth. Until now, that is -- I don't think I chuckled once at The Deuce, and not even the absurdity of twin James Francos with silly li'l mustaches helps to relieve its sad black meanness.
Nonetheless, the writing, production, & acting are all phenomenal, esp Maggie Gyllenhaal as a headstrong whore who develops an ambition to direct smut films; in fact, The Deuce boasts so many admirable elements I'm compelled to recommend it ... and also to forgive anyone who chooses to skip this 9-hour downer.
