After months have passed without a culprit in her daughter's murder case, Mildred Hayes makes a bold move, painting three signs leading into her town with a controversial message directed at William Willoughby, the town's revered chief of police. When his second-in-command Officer Dixon, an immature mother's boy with a penchant for violence, gets involved, the battle between Mildred and Ebbing's law enforcement is only exacerbated.

This is the movie that should have won Best Picture! Best Actress Frances McDormand and Best Supporting Actor Sam Rockwell well deserved their awards. It's a story of unbearable loss, guilt, and forgiveness. Even has humor (though somewhat dark).

Great way to get your point across.

As far as I can see this is a decent entry into the "payback" film category and that's pretty much it. It's a strain to feel any kind of sympathy for the foul-mouthed, racist and homophobic leads (possibly excepting the character "Red"). Certainly nothing to write home about, though several suicide notes contained creative and interesting prose. Was their some deep prior relationship between the characters played by Harrelson and McDormand?

It was a good movie, but I don't know why people are raving. The three main "messages" of the film are all offensive to me. I'd spoil the movie if I explained.

What an Emotional Roller coaster ride! A great look at how people deal with anger, wanting revenge and seeking vengeance. This is what happens when people try to right a wrong with another wrong. Well deserved oscars to Sam and Frances! Really makes you think. Also, loved Woody's character and the plot with him dealing with terminal cancer...

A story about loss, remorse and revenge - an excellent film with a strong cast. Has a Coen Brothers feel - edgy, dark comedy, violent and makes you think. Well deserved Oscar for Frances McDormand.

Incredible casting... to be continued I hope. Don't miss a short film "Six Shooter" in the bonus material... again well cast.

Inspired by an actual murder case and billboards (read about the heartbreaking true story and people in “Summary”), an angry and bereaved mother put up billboards that insinuated police incompetence. The billboards divided and inflamed the community, especially between the police staffs and the oppressed minorities in the southern town. Among them, the two most damaged souls, both won in this year’s Oscar for Best Actress (McDormand) and Best Supporting Actor (Rockwell), somehow found solace and reconciliation with each other. Standing ovations for their performances and the writer who put the words in their mouths. Note: wonderful soundtrack with classic oldies and original score.

Very good movie!!! Did not want it to end.

Dark but a sarcastic yet realistic reflection of the human condition, particularly in these times. So many clever twists and turns that even the rare masterminds among us will think "Whoa...didnt see that coming". This isnt a movie. This is a film. It is no masterpiece, but it is far superior to the usual Hollywood crap aimed at the unwashed masses.

Real-life story of the father who inspired the Oscar-nominated film Three Billboards with his messages to the 'corrupt' police who 'botched' the case of his raped and strangled daughter (and it's not in Missouri)

Many many quotes including racial slurs in IMDb already. Thanks to the posters who shared them:

Lyrics to the "Last Rose Of Summer":
'Tis the last rose of summer left blooming alone
All her lovely companions are faded and gone
No flower of her kindred, no rosebud is nigh
To reflect back her blushes and give sigh for sigh

I'll not leave thee, thou lone one, to pine on the stem
Since the lovely are sleeping, go sleep thou with them
Thus kindly I scatter thy leaves o'er the bed
Where thy mates of the garden lie scentless and dead

So soon may I follow when friendships decay
And from love's shining circle the gems drop away
When true hearts lie withered and fond ones are flown
Oh who would inhabit this bleak world alone?
This bleak world alone
