While riding the subway home from the pool with his abuela one day, Julián notices three women spectacularly dressed up. Their hair billows in brilliant hues, their dresses end in fishtails, and their joy fills the train car. When Julián gets home, daydreaming of the magic he's seen, all he can think about is dressing up just like the ladies in his own fabulous mermaid costume: a butter-yellow curtain for his tail, the fronds of a potted fern for his headdress. But what will Abuela think about the mess he makes -- and even more importantly, what will she think about how Julián sees himself?

Opinion

From Library Staff

Julian likes to pretend he's a mermaid when he's at the pool, and when he gets home his imagination continues to go wild. When his grandma catches him playing pretend she does something unexpected and incredibly heartwarming.

Gorgeous, vibrant art crowns this story of a boy who imagines himself as a beautiful mermaid and a grandmother who accepts and encourages his imagination without censure.

One of the most stunning picture books of 2018, hands-down, and we're just halfway through the year! Every tiny detail in this book is so lovely - from the endpapers changing from a swimming pool in the front to a blue ocean full of mermaids in the back, to the recurring patterns (the fish with the necklace & Julián's abuela's dress)... You could pore over this for hours and still find something new and beautiful on each page. The fact that the story itself is so warm and loving, on top of the fantastic illustrations, makes this a book I will be telling everyone about this year (and beyond).

A beautifully illustrated children's book with a great theme of acceptance and enjoying what makes you happy even if it's different!

Julián is fabulous! What a positive message of imagination, individuality, and acceptance this picture book brings to light. At first I was worried that Julián's abuela would crush his desire to dress as a mermaid, she is very much a no-nonsense grandmother, but I felt ALL the warm snugglies by the end. Abuela brings Julián to a seaside festival with a diverse collection of mermaids, including some drag queens, and you get the sense that he has found his tribe. The illustrations in this book are stunning, and the character designs are so unique. I could stare at Abuela all day! I definitely want to gift this book to one of my lucky nieces.
