These two short novels aptly demonstrate the range of Wayne Overholser's American frontier fiction. High Valley is set in the Colorado Rockies, where Grant Talbot works as ramrod for the Wagon Wheel spread. The owner has died in questionable circumstances, and his widow threatens to sell out if Grant doesn't return her affection. In Chumley's Gold, young Dan Larsen learns after his mother's death that his father was a bank robber, and may have stashed his stolen loot on a ranch that he owned. But the ranch has been claimed by Dutch Dorfman, who is a law unto himself.
