It was worth enduring the folksy and often repetetive narrative to get an intimate and honest glimpse of life on a cattle ranch in Arizona and New Mexico in the first half of the 20th century. O'Connor and her brother, H. Alan Day, make no attempt to glamorize or otherwise soften the harsh realities of ranch life. The book was obviously not edited much outside the Day family (thus the repetition and other editorial quirks) and I think this preserved the candid and affectionate quality of the narrative.
