Alec Guiness, Herbert Lom, Peter Sellers, et al play buffoon criminals that try to outfox an old lady. The local police are no smarter than our criminals in this farcical comedy/criminal movie. Only thing I ask, are those some kind of fake teeth attached to Guiness’ real teeth? Or is it distortion from the camera shots? The harmless opening scene sets up the final scene as we find out who are the most clueless characters in the film.

Top shelf cast and writing. I had no idea Peter Sellers and Herbert Lom made a pre-Pink Panther movie together. I thoroughly enjoyed it, especially the adorable little old Mrs. Lopsided.

This movie was entertaining and interesting but not one of my favorite for this year. “Not too bad---good performance”. "I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.”

This very funny film is about a group of robbers, including Sir Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers, who plan a job involving the little old lady landlord of one of the men as part of the scheme, without her knowledge. She later discovers the crime, and the men take turns trying to kill her, with surprising results.

A delightful film, full of excellent character actors (character actor; noun, a talented actor of at least forty years of age, probably of an extreme or minuscule height or weight, rarely of conventional good looks, sometimes downright ugly), and events which are called 'hi-jinks' if they were performed by youths. Disturbingly, I have walked around in much of the area that this takes place, and it's a bit of a shock when that knowledge arrives. Even more so is the realization that bunches of it are still there (for someone who lives in a country when things are "restored to the way it was over *50* years ago!). No doubt Christopher Fowler will be able to explain how the best locations of the film — especially the pub across the road from the Police Station — is now gone. Like any good comedy, this is entirely plausible. The entire thing could happen; not just then, but now or in the future. Like any good comedy, you shouldn't analyze it too closely either, as it needs to be accepted on its own terms and with all disbelief suspended. Like any good comedy, you shouldn't know too much about it going in, otherwise the thing will be all spoiled for you. So watch it.

This movie is almost a masterpiece. The writing and acting are spot-on. Unlike today's movies, this one assumes the viewer has some intelligence and sensitivity to subtle humor.
Mrs. Wilberforce (Katie Johnson) is a joy to watch. She's perfect as a batty, little old lady who is confronted by inept criminals. Everyone's quirkiness is in synch.

One-Round: "I said nobody was to do her!" (Begins attacking Louis, who beats him continuously over the head with a blackjack; Mrs. Wilberforce comes out of the next room) Mrs. Louisa Wilberforce: "Mr. Harvey!" One-Round: "I said -- I said nobody was to do Mrs. Lopsided!" Mrs. Louisa Wilberforce: "Stop that!" (Louis hits One-Round one last time with the blackjack) Mrs. Louisa Wilberforce: "What *are* you doing? And who is "Mrs. Lopsided", may I ask?"
