The midnighters series is easily a favorite. The concept and execution are both very original and Westerfeld clearly did his homework when writing the series. The monsters and the secret hour are both original on their own, but Westerfeld's take on his characters' "powers" are probably some of the more unique ideas I've seen in a while. Even psychic Melissa, who has the most familiar powerset of the group, experiences her telepathy differently than you generally see in fiction.

The characters all feel real and fleshed out, behaving with their own interests and priorities in mind. Their personalities are well developed and their conflicts feel natural because of it. This makes their working together all the more interesting, as their personalities clash and align with the story.

One of my favourite series and authors. A completely different take on supernatural abilities. A must read for those into the abnormal.

I really did not like this series very much. I read all three books expecting them to get better, but they never did.
I was really excited when I discovered this series because I love Scott Westerfeld's work, but this whole series was just not good. The concept was very interesting and could've been very good, but the execution was terrible.
Unlike the 'Uglies' and 'Leviathan' universes, this one was poorly thought through and not even a tenth as rich. Uglies impressed me greatly because the culture was so incredibly, stunningly vivid and believable that I found myself using slang from the book while talking in real life. This series lacks all the charm and charisma of Westerfeld's other series(I strongly recommend both Uglies and Leviathan), and it is truly not worth reading.

The Secret Hour
Scott Westerfeld

Scott Westerfeld has a very driving plot with lots of action. An imaginative and fun read.

The idea behind this series is really well thought out and really original - Awesome book.
