In case anyone missed it, Deborah Eisenberg is one of the writers who objected to the PEN Foundation honoring the Charlie Hebdo magazine writers, artists and staff who were massacred by Al Qaeda operatives. You might think that any writer would value free speech, but Eisenberg produced a list of other writers who should've been honored instead of Charlie Hebdo. The list included Glenn Greenwald, another reactionary writer who openly sympathized with the murderers and condemned the victims literally on the same day as a subsequent attack in Paris killed four more people in a Jewish deli. Fascism has become fashionable on the left so long as it's of the anti-Western variety.

What a wonderful collection. This is my first Deborah Eisenberg book, but it won't be my last. The stories capture people in various forms of uncomfortable transitions, and treats each person with delicacy, sensitivity and honesty. I also agree with the many reviewers who have noted that she has been one of the best at capturing both the immediacy and the longer term impact of September 11th.

Oh, that day! One kept waiting - as if a morning would arrive from before that day to take them all along a different track. One kept waiting for that shattering day to unhappen, so that the real - the intended - future, the one that had been implied by the past, could unfold. Hour after hour, month after month, waiting for that day to not have happened. But it had happened. And now it was always going to have happened.
