This is an excellent novel to teach in middle school. It lends itself to great discussions on themes of immigration, family, friendship, courage, sacrifice, coming of age, and more. In fact, La Linea--the border, or the crossing line, has a triple meaning: physically crossing the border to the US, crossing into a different culture, and coming of age--crossing to adulthood. This novel works great with the informational text on immigration and a documentary video "The Way Home."
