Plato and A Platypus Walk Into A Bar

Understanding Philosophy Through Jokes

The great philosopher Aristotle once said "Humor is the only test of gravity, for a subject which will not bear raillery is suspicious." Taking this tenet to task, Cathart and Klein tackle all the major philosophical perspectives--ancient and postmodern alike--and make them universally accessible through hilarious jokes that cut straight to the core of the principle. Hobbes, for instance, believed that life is "solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short." Why then, the authors ask, did he complain about it being short?

A quick and funny overview of some key philosophical ideas. Its best listened to in small portions, too much at once and it becomes a bit tiresome.

A good idea in theory, but in execution leaves something to be desired. This is a case where it might work better reading the book, rather than listening to someone reading it to you. Part of the problem for this audio-CD version is the audio reader isn't particularly skilled at the various pauses, stammering, vocal inflections, etc. needed for properly telling jokes. And with the lack of an audience response, the jokes come off stale. It would have been better to edit-in actual comedy-club comedians telling the jokes. On the plus side, the philosophy-themed prose is well done and interesting, and gives the listener a good, albeit brief, survey of the highlights of Western philosophy. Modestly recommended.

Loved it. One joke made me uncomfortable, which isn't bad! It's both light and heavy at the same time -- there is actually some teaching of philosophy included
