"Heidi seems the proverbial "all-American girl" from small-town Pulaski, Tennessee. But she was born Mai Thi Hiep in Danang, Vietnam, the daughter of an American serviceman and a Vietnamese woman. At the war's end, her mother, hearing rumors that racially mixed children would be persecuted, placed the 7-year-old girl on an "Operation Babylift" plane to the United States. Twenty-two years later mother and daughter are miraculously reunited in Danang. But what seems like the cue for a happy ending is anything but as Heidi and her Vietnamese relatives are caught in a heart-wrenching clash of cultures."--Container.

Such a sad story about a Vietnamese daughter of an American Serviceman who, having been adopted in America, tries to connect as an adult with her birth mother and family in Vietnam. Having experienced wounding in her adoptive experience she returned to her homeland in anticipation of finding the love of family that she had missed out on growing up. But the cultural clash proved too much for her to bear as she had hoped to be loved for herself, not for any material assets she might provide. Confronted by very unexpected differences in cultural expectations she breaks down and returns home in pain. Heartbreaking.

I cannot understand why a young educated woman like Heidi did not bother to learn about the vietnamese culture and inquire about the customs before meeting with her mother.
She is the one who benefited from the separation!

I understand from the latest news about Heidi (2012) that she has not been in contact with her vietnamese family....
