When the narrator of White's poised yet scalding autobiographical novel first embarks on his sexual odyssey, it is the 1950s, and America is "a big gray country of families on drowsy holiday." That country has no room for a scholarly teenager with guilty but insatiable stirrings toward other men. Moving from a Midwestern college to the Stonewall Tavern on the night of the first gay uprising--and populated by eloquent queens, butch poseurs, and a fearfully incompetent shrink--The Beautiful Room is Emptyconflates the acts of coming out and coming of age. "With intelligence, candor, humor--and anger--White explores the most insidious aspects of oppression.... An impressive novel."--Washington Post book World

And now I have finished the second book of White's trilogy. How did I get off on this tangent of gay literature? I'm not sure.

White is one of those authors who compels me to read aloud, so that I will not skip or interpolate any of the words that he strings into sentences. His honest writing about his homosexuality tends to be shocking, but never left me with the impression that shock was the sole intent. This is his story. It is what it is.

And yes, I've already put in my request for the final book in the trilogy, "The Farewell Symphony".
