A fan of the BBC's Lovejoy antiques TV show, I thought I'd try the books by Gash. They are not the same. There is no twinkle in Tinker's eye, as he is just a minor rummy character. The lightness and humor are absent and in their place we have 5 killings, although the two by our hero can be said to be self defense and accidental. Lovejoy himself is darker, more cynical and definitely hates the police. He romps even more freely in beds with ladies so numerous that it is confusing. The plot and its ending I also found confusing. Nonetheless the slang terminology of the antiques world (and the criminal world around it) is prominently featured and the facts about antiques and fakes are real. Mordant observations about modern English life are obviously the author's. Those not wishing for an extension of the TV series may find the books more appealing than I did, especially with a strong yen for antiques and a taste for Britspeak.
